Building a Paper Packaging Additive System
Paper and molded-fiber performance is usually built through more than one mechanism. XIAOJU’s Paper Packaging Solutions portfolio is organized into three distinct series—Molded Fiber Barrier Additives, Molded Fiber Reinforcement Additives and Paper Barrier Coating Agents—so each function can be selected and validated independently.
1. Series one: Molded Fiber Barrier Additives
Barrier additives are introduced into the fiber system to build resistance during the wet-end process. This series contains RETERRA RT901, RETERRA RT326 and FluoRight 660. RT901 is the dual water-and-oil PFAS-free option, RT326 focuses on PFAS-free oil and grease resistance, and FluoRight 660 provides a fluorinated oil and grease barrier route.
Because these chemistries are added before forming, their effectiveness depends on distribution and retention within the fiber network as well as the downstream drying and conversion process.
2. Series two: Molded Fiber Reinforcement Additives
Mechanical performance is a separate design variable from barrier performance. RETERRA C101 is a 3D cellulose reinforcement additive developed to improve fiber-to-fiber bonding, stiffness and surface durability while helping reduce linting and dusting. It can therefore be evaluated when the product needs stronger structure or a cleaner surface without treating reinforcement as a side effect of the barrier chemistry.
3. Series three: Paper Barrier Coating Agents
RETERRA RT940 represents the surface-treatment route. Instead of relying only on wet-end addition, a coating agent allows barrier chemistry to be placed on the paper surface after sheet or article formation. This can be useful when the converter needs surface-focused oil and water resistance or when the manufacturing route is built around coating rather than internal addition.
4. Build the formulation from functions, not product count
A clear development sequence is to define the required functions first: water barrier, oil and grease barrier, structural reinforcement, surface durability and surface-applied barrier. The formulator can then decide which of the three series are needed and test only the relevant combinations.
This function-led approach also makes cost optimization more rational. Instead of increasing every additive simultaneously, the team can identify which function is limiting the final package and concentrate development effort there.
